While in transit at Singapore’s Changi Airport on June 23, American dentist Kapadia Husain Zoher, 35, stole a Louis Vuitton card holder worth about S$600 and a Dior Sauvage perfume valued around S$160 from two separate stores, with his engineer wife Kapadia Amatullah, 30, acting as a lookout during one theft.
The couple, en route to India, managed to board their Mumbai-bound flight but were apprehended before takeoff after security footage identified them. Both stolen items, totaling over S$750, were recovered and returned to the retailers.
On August 4, Zoher was sentenced to 18 days’ jail after pleading guilty to theft, while Amatullah received a one-week jail term following a similar guilty plea. Prosecutors noted Zoher's habit of overspending as a motive, describing the theft as driven by greed. Singapore’s strict laws impose penalties of up to seven years in jail and fines for such offenses, underscoring the authorities’ firm stance on shop thefts, especially in highly secure transit areas like Changi Airport.
The incident unfolded at Terminal 1’s Louis Vuitton store and Terminal 3’s The Shilla Cosmetics & Perfumes outlet. CCTV footage captured Zoher taking the items without paying; police investigations promptly identified and arrested the couple. The case highlights how even travelers in transit can face severe consequences for theft in Singapore’s airports, known globally for stringent security and legal enforcement.
