Travellers departing from the UAE to the US are advised to pack electric toothbrushes and other lithium-powered devices in carry-on luggage rather than checked bags, according to the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This precaution ensures that in the unlikely event of a battery malfunction or fire, flight crews can respond immediately, reducing risk. The TSA specifically advises that any spare or uninstalled lithium batteries must be placed in a carry-on bag.
If travellers choose to pack such devices in checked luggage, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns they must be completely powered off and protected against accidental activation or damage. This guidance applies not only to electric toothbrushes but also to other lithium-ion or lithium-metal battery-powered devices such as power banks, laptops, and cell phones.
Additionally, the TSA has updated rules banning cordless hair styling tools powered by gas cartridges or butane from checked luggage. Passengers can still carry these devices in the cabin if safely packed.
Recent TSA changes have also eased other travel hassles, such as eliminating the shoe removal requirement at checkpoints for all travelers, a rule that was once part of enhanced security protocols post-2001.
Travellers are encouraged to review updated TSA guidelines before flying and consult the TSA website for comprehensive, alphabetized lists of permitted items to ensure a smooth security experience.
