Iraq has officially abolished its visa-on-arrival policy for 37 nationalities, including Europeans, Americans, and Britons, effective March 1, 2025. This change comes four years after the initial implementation of the electronic visa system.
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has announced that travelers from affected countries must now obtain an electronic visa (e-Visa) before departing for Iraq. The list of countries impacted by this change includes all European Union member states, as well as Australia, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, South Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
New e-Visa System
-
Travelers must apply through the official evisa.iq portal.
-
The e-Visa application process requires:
-
Completing an online form with personal and travel information
-
Uploading a copy of the passport and a passport photo
-
-
The total cost is approximately 206,000 IQD (about 145 € / 158 US$), including e-visa and health insurance fees.
-
Processing time for e-visa applications is expected to be 24 to 48 hours.
Reasons for the Change
The Iraqi government cites several reasons for this policy shift:
-
Better control of tourist flows
-
Digitization of procedures to simplify visitor entry
-
Reduction of waiting times at immigration checkpoints
-
Improvement of immigration enforcement
Iraqi authorities have emphasized the importance of obtaining a visa before boarding to avoid any inconvenience1. This new system is expected to streamline the entry process and create a more organized and secure entry for all visitors.
